What are surgical clips made out of?
Most surgical clips used for duct and artery control are made from sterile titanium, and similar clips were used for our patient during her surgery. Titanium is a biocompatible material and inert. However, the use of titanium surgical clips is not without complication.
Can you be allergic to surgical clips?
Allergy to surgical titanium clips is a rare complication, but in patients with a history of severe allergic diseases, a preoperative immunologic examination should be performed and the patient’s history of metal allergy should be investigated.
Is it normal to leave surgical clips in?
Most surgical clips are currently made of titanium, and as many as 30 to 40 clips may be used during a single surgical procedure. They remain inside the patient’s body after the wounds are healed.
What happens if surgical clips are not removed?
In severe cases, objects left inside after surgery can be fatal. Surgical clips left in the body, needles left behind in patients, surgical sponges not removed, gauze left in the patient, scalpels left inside, all of these may be considered medical malpractice.
How long should surgical clips stay in?
Stitches, clips and staples are usually removed between five and 21 days after treatment, depending on the type of operation you have had. Wounds which are less than 5cm long can be glued with special skin glue. Although the glue is waterproof, try to keep the wound dry for about 5 days.
Can you have an MRI with surgical clips?

Signs and symptoms of metal hypersensitivities can range from small and localized to more severe and generalized. Limited reactions can appear as a contact dermatitis on the skin that has been exposed to the metal. The skin may appear red, swollen, and itchy. Hives and rashes may also develop.
Can titanium cause metal poisoning?
Indeed, the metal alloys used in arthroplasty, including cobalt, chromium, titanium, and aluminum, can release degradation products into the surrounding tissue. These, when circulated systemically, may cause dose-dependent symptoms of metal intoxication [5,6].
